What do you get when you mix five up-and-coming actors, well written monologues, a panel of judges and a boisterous Brooklyn audience who’s passionate about the craft of acting? You get the IFNY Monologue Slam.

Having orchestrated three wildly successful Monologue Slams at Long Island Univeristy’s Kumble Theater, IFNY brought us another. The December 2010 group of talented actors competed for prizes and the IFNY championship title through a series of challenges and boot camp-like exercises in front of industry judges and a cheering audience. The Slam was hosted by Malik Yoba Of The Malik Yoba National Theater and his lovely Co-Host Osas Ighodaro, Miss Black USA 2010, and a talented actress in her own right – she hit us up with a powerful monologue, too!

Contestants were Vladimi Versailles, Garrett Lee Hendricks, Carmen Mitzi Sinnot,  Raqiyah Mays, Marjuan Canady.
The Judges were actor & singer Marishka S. Phillips, acting coach Tracey Moore, actor Nashawn Kearse (Desperate Housewives, Entourage, My Brother), and actor & comedian Kevin Brown (30 Rock, Last Comic Standing).

There was an acting class in the audience, and its members were taking notes at a valuable learning experience for anyone who cares about the craft. Also on the scene was veteran stage and screen actor Joe Morton (Terminator, Brother from Another Planet, Eureka, All My Children, The Good Wife), who schooled the actors on the 5 most important questions an actor must ask.

Overall, the event was a raucous good time of thespianism that was emboldened, impassioned and skillful. I can’t wait for next year’s.

Shout out to IFNY’s Attika Torrence and Donavan Lambert!
